What is a Digital Twin?

A Digital Twin is a virtual representation of an asset, subsystem, or system, combining digital aspects of how the equipment is built with real-time aspects of how it is operated and maintained. The capability to refer to data stored in various locations from one common Digital Twin directory enables simulation, diagnostics, prediction, and other advanced use cases.

The digital twin has a role to play in every step of the asset lifecycle – from immersive technology in the design phase, to informing the supply chain in the operations phase. In the offshore oil & gas industry, digital twins can be used to simulate ‘what-if’ or ‘what-will’ scenarios to raise asset productivity, reliability, and performance.

IDTA (Industrial Digital Twin Association) sees itself as a powerful alliance that is actively shaping the future of the Digital Twin in an innovative way. Its active members include many top industrial firms that are internationally recognized as technology leaders. The joint expertise in many fields lays the foundations for knowing the exact practical requirements that the Digital Twin needs to meet and for fulfilling them in technical and organizational terms with IDTA.
